Has Facebook Come Between Us?

As part of their new “stockholders-first” company mandate, Facebook has made some changes that make it much harder for fans to stay in touch with the pages they “like.”

How many fans do you think really get to see the Facebook updates of their “liked” pages?

Between 5–18%.

That’s pretty dismal.

If you want to reach more than a measly 5–18%, Facebook now CHARGES to show your posts to more fans. This basically knocks the wind out of the sails of blogs, small businesses and non-profits that depend on Facebook to reach their fans, customers and donors. (Thanks, Facebook.)

I don’t know about you, but when I like a page, it is because I would like to stay in touch with the company and learn more about what they are into.

I enjoy interacting with fans and readers on Facebook, and I try very hard to make the Small Footprint Family Facebook page a valuable resource by posting dozens of real food and environmental news items, petitions, giveaways, and inspiring images every day.

But my posts are only helpful and inspiring if they are seen.

Which is why we are going to beat Facebook’s new profit-at-all-costs system today!

To make sure you don’t miss a post from ANY of the fan pages that you like, you will need to do the following…

1.  Go to the Small Footprint Family Facebook fanpage.

2.  Make sure you have “liked” my page. :-)

3.  Hover over the “Liked” button (position your computer’s cursor over the “Liked” button) at the top right of the fanpage, and a drop-down menu will appear there.

4.  Click on “Show in News Feed” or make sure it is selected.

5.  Again, hover over the “Liked” button. You’ll see an option to create a “New List.” Once you click on +New List, you will see Small Footprint Family added to your list, as shown below.

6. If you want to make sure you see ALL of your favorite pages, just click on “Pages,” and continue adding the pages you want to keep up with to your new list. When done, click the “Next” button at the bottom of the page.

7. Name your new list. (You can see I’ve named mine, “Favorites.”) You can opt to make your list public and share it with friends, or keep it private. When you’re finished, click the “Done” button at the bottom of the page.

8. Now, here’s the fun part… In your Facebook sidebar under “Interests,” click on the little pencil icon on the left of your list name and select “Add to Favorites.” This will move your list right to the top of your sidebar, for quick and easy access.

9. From now on, you can click on your new list and be able to see ALL of the recent posts for ALL of the pages in your list, not just what Facebook chooses to show you at any given moment.

You get to choose what posts you see and how many. And most importantly, no more missing out on the posts of your favorite pages!

And always remember:

“If you are not paying for something, you’re not the customer; you’re the product being sold.”

I LOVE THE LIST feature! I have gone crazy with it – created list of area town businesses, health, farming, vintage, business, friends that some how do not show up on my feed, Recipes cooking, survival the list goes on! the list feature is one way to beat Fb. Now if they would just implement it for our pages too!

Thank you so much for this post! I actually just asked my facebook followers how to get more than 5 of my “liked” pages in my newsfeed. I feel like I’ve been missing out on so much!!! I’m going to share this on my facebook page…maybe even share the post on my website if that is okay with you.

In order to see your fan page posts, you need to actually click on your new list in the sidebar once you have created it.
