We like a hearty, high-protein breakfast after working out and doing morning chores, but lately, perhaps due to the change of season, I haven’t wanted to make or eat anything too elaborate. One recent morning, torn between an empty fridge and an empty belly, out of sheer necessity, I stumbled on a new way of making breakfast.

This breakfast barely deserves to be called a recipe, really, but it does give new meaning to the idea of “nuts and berries.” It is very, very easy to make: I typically keep all the ingredients handy in airtight, latch-lid canning jars, so all I have to do is open a bunch of them, reach in, grab, and combine.

This “cereal” is very nutritious and filling. It is especially good if you do a lot of physical work in the morning that requires extra energy.

High-Energy Raw Breakfast Cereal

  • Small handful raw pecans (6-10 complete half nuts, previously soaked and dried)
  • Small handful raw walnuts (6-10 complete half nuts, previously soaked and dried)
  • Small handful raw almonds (8-10 whole nuts, previously soaked and dried)
  • Small handful raw sunflower seeds (previously soaked and dried)
  • Small handful raw pumpkin seeds (previously soaked and dried)
  • Very small handful raw sesame seeds (previously soaked and dried)
  • Very small handful raisins
  • Very small handful coconut flakes
  • Very small handful goji berries or other dried berries
  • Large pinch cacao nibs (optional)
  • Fresh fruit, cut up (if you have it)
  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a cereal-sized bowl until you have the amount of cereal you want to eat.
  2. Feel free to substitute nuts, seeds or fruits according to taste and availability.
  3. Pour hemp milk, almond milk, yogurt, or raw cow’s milk over the cereal.
  4. Enjoy!

I used to do this until I realized that eating too many nuts at one time makes me sluggish, feeling funny in the stomach, and not enough protein, it’s also SO heavy. Now I do yogurt from a good source, some nuts and some fruit. Much better
