However vegans should know that Vitamin D2, which is sourced from yeast, is not as effective at raising Vitamin D levels in the body as Vitamin D3, especially when the D3 is sourced from fish oils (as opposed to lanolin). Most holistic practitioners are now recommending at least 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day, but up to 10,000 IU can be taken without toxicity. Vegans would need at least 1000 IU of D2. Knowing how deficient you are via blood test can help determine the dosage you need.</description>
